11-year-old boy convicted for raping sister

August 25, 2016

A 12-year-old boy who is believed to be Britain’s youngest ever rapist was convicted after he admitted to raping his younger sister twice when he was just 11-year-old.

The small boy carried out the sex attacks on his nine-year-old sister on two separate occasions while at their home in Plymouth, a court heard.

The boy, now 12, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, admitted to two counts of rape at an earlier hearing.

The attacks took place on February 26 and March 8 this year and he ejaculated during one of the attacks.

Bodmin Magistrates’ Court heard how ‘images’ had been found on his phone but no further details were given.

District Judge Diane Baker told him: ‘I know a lot about what has happened in your life and your mum’s life in the past and the difficulties you faced and the confusion you face now about how you wish to lead your life.

‘But what you did was so serious and so damaging to your little sister.

‘She was nine-years-old – she does not understand about those things and you hurt her so seriously that that will last with her for the whole of her life.

‘If you were older, I’m telling you now you would be serving a sentence of detention – that’s like prison. But you were only 11.’

She added that the ejaculation was an ‘aggravating factor’.

The youngster was sentenced to a 12-month intensive referral order, which means he will work with experts to improve his behaviour and put on the sex offenders’ register for two and a half years.

He was supported in court by his mother and foster mother.

Judge Baker also said she wanted social services to ensure the boy had access to ‘male influences’ in his life.

Defending the boy, Jodie Leonard, said: ‘He is due to start at school again – I asked him how he is getting on. He is working really hard.’

Britain’s previous youngest convicted rapist was a boy from Bolton, who attacked two girls a couple of months before he turned 12 in 2012.

Police engage armed robbers in gun duel, kill one

August 24, 2016

Bayelsa State Police Commissioner, Mr. Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi

Simon Utebor, Yenagoa

A suspected notorious armed robber, identified as Innocent Kokorifa, was gunned down by the police in Bayelsa State after his three-man gang engaged the police in a fierce gun duel.

It was learnt that Kokorifa, who was fatally wounded by the police during the exchange of fire, died a few hours after he was arrested and taken to the hospital.

The two other gang members were said to have escaped in the heat of the gun battle, abandoning their arms.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command, Mr. Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident.

Butswat said that policemen from the Anti-Vice/Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the command, had on August 17, 2016, acting on a tip-off, stormed an uncompleted building on Air Force Road, Okaka, Yenagoa, to arrest a three-man notorious armed robbery gang.

The spokesman said the suspected armed robbers, on seeing the police and in a frantic attempt to escape, fired at the police and the police returned fire injuring one of the suspects in the process.

Butswat stated, “The suspects on sighting the police and in a frantic bid to escape, fired at the Police. The police returned fire and one of the suspects sustained a bullet injury, while the others escaped.

“The fleeing suspects abandoned one locally-made single-barrell pistol, one live cartridge, one expended cartridge and wraps of substances suspected to be cannabis.

“The wounded suspect was arrested and taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, for treatment, but died a few hours later. The deceased suspect was later identified as one Innocent Kokorifa, male.”

He said efforts had been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects, adding that investigation was ongoing.

NCC arrests 15 pirates, seizes goods worth N60m

August 24, 2016

The Lagos zonal office of the Nigerian Copyright Commission has arrested 15 suspected pirates and seized goods worth N60 million in the last seven months.

Mr Uwem Udoh, the Zonal Manager, said on Wednesday in Lagos that the commission carried out the anti-piracy raids in Ojo, Somolu and Festac town.

He said that the action was also extended to some major markets in the state.

He said, “The commission carried out raids in Alaba Market , Festac town and Somolu about two months ago and we arrested several pirates.

“We arrested 15 pirates in the last seven months.

“The total estimated value of seized pirated goods in the first and second quarters of the year is about N60 million.’’

Udoh said the commission was intensifying efforts to maintain its zero-tolerance policy against piracy, as part of its plans for the year.

He added that the commission recently raided the Alaba International Market in Ojo in furtherance of its efforts to clamp down on major piracy hubs in the state.

He said some of the suspects have been charged to the Federal High Court in Lagos.

He said that the commission conducted anti-piracy inspection in professional print, publishers and CDs’ distribution outlets within Lagos metropolis where it made some seizures.

He added that the commission was stepping up its anti-piracy raids in the third and last quarters of the year to reduce acts of piracy in the state and in the country.

Udoh said that despite the financial challenge confronting the commission, it achieved a lot in the last seven months.

He said that it needed more funds to achieve its set mandate.
