Why Can't Infants Eat Egg Whites?

Introduce eggs into a baby's diet slowly to watch for symptoms of a food allergy.

The first year of an infant’s life is full of new opportunities and exiting developments. Along with learning to crawl, play and mimic your sounds, your baby will also develop an interest in new foods -- often attempting to try food from your plate when you’re not looking. Although you might be tempted to give your baby a few bites here and there, be cautious. Certain foods, such as egg whites, can cause serious problems in infants.

Infant Feeding Guidelines

For the first four to six months of an infant’s life, breastmilk and iron-fortified infant formula should be the only food provided. During these first few months, your baby’s digestive system continues to develop and cannot yet handle solid foods such as eggs. Around age four to six months, begin introducing pureed fruits or semi-liquid rice cereal in addition to breastmilk or formula. As your child gets more comfortable with pureed fruits, introduce pureed vegetables, meats and beans around age six to eight months. Around eight to 10 months of age, add egg yolks to your baby’s diet. After hard-boiling an egg, remove the shell and egg white and use a fork to break the yolk into small pieces.

Infants and Egg Allergies

Since egg allergies can create dangerous symptoms in kids, many pediatricians do not recommend serving egg whites until the baby is older than one year. Since the egg white contains allergenic components, yolks generally tend to be safer. Your pediatrician will recommend a good time to introduce egg whites. After introducing both the yolks and the whites, monitor your child for signs of an allergic reaction. Symptoms of a food allergy include flushing, an itchy rash or hives, swelling, irritability, diarrhea, vomiting and wheezing. Contact your pediatrician if signs of an egg allergy appear -- or seek emergency medical treatment if your baby has swelling near the mouth or throat or difficulty breathing, or is excessively vomiting.

Allergies vs. Sensitivities

The “Parents” Magazine website explains that it’s not uncommon for kids to have a negative reaction to eggs the first time they try them. In many cases, this negative reaction is just a food sensitivity, rather than an allergy. Symptoms of food sensitivities might include gas, constipation or vomiting. If you suspect a food sensitivity, avoid eggs for a few weeks before slowly introducing them back into your baby’s diet.

Other Concerns

Make sure the egg whites or yolks are completely cooked before giving them to your baby. Raw or undercooked eggs might contain salmonella, a type of bacteria that can cause food poisoning. Also avoid feeding your child any foods that contain raw eggs, such as homemade ice cream, mousse or raw cookie dough or cake batter.

TOP 5 REASONS TO FEED YOUR BABY EGG YOLKS

Psst... I want to let you in on my secret to healthy hair, skin, and nails. And digestion. And energy. And lower stress. And less inflammation. Wait - this isn't a miracle or a fad. It's science. I'm talking about gelatin. I eat it every day in my famous coffee smoothie. Learn more about the benefits of gelatin and how easy it is to add it to your daily life in The Gelatin Secret. Check it out HERE. You'll love it!

Feed your baby egg yolks? Yeah, I know how that sounds. This is a post in open defiance of all the pretty little jars of baby food lined up on grocery story shelves. Yes, they are colorful and have pictures of adorable babies on the label. Does that make them the ideal first foods for babies? Nope. It just makes them the politically correct and socially acceptable way to feed your baby.

Traditional cultures did not have grocery stores filled with tiny glass jars of mashed fruits and veggies. So how in the world did they manage to feed their growing babies? With real food, of course! I’m talking about egg yolks. Yep. Golden, wholesome, nutrient-dense egg yolks are the ideal first food for babies.

“Around the world, through the centuries, almost universally, the first solid food we’ve ever introduced to babies were egg yolks.”

from page 168 in Beautiful Babies by Kristen Michaelis

TOP 5 REASONS TO FEED YOUR BABY EGG YOLKS

Egg yolks contain cholesterol. No, it’s not politically correct, but cholesterol is crucial for brain development (which is why breast milk contains plenty of cholesterol!).Egg yolks are rich in fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin A, D, E and K. “These vitamins are essential for your baby to grow a strong, sturdy bone structure. They also dramatically affect how your baby’s face forms.” (from page 167 in Beautiful Babies) These are the nutrients prized so highly in the traditional cultures explored by Weston A. Price, who marveled at the beautiful facial structure and teeth of the well nourished children he saw.Egg yolks are a great source of other vitamins and minerals that are important for growing babies. Like choline, vitamin B12, thiamin, riboflavin, folate, zinc, copper, selenium, and more!Egg yolks are a good source of natural fats and proteins for your baby. Breastmilk is a marvelous balance of fats, proteins and natural carbohydrates. Feeding egg yolks to baby fits perfectly into their nutritional requirements, especially alongside other nutritious first foods like fresh mashed banana.Egg yolks are easy to digest. This is important, because a baby’s digestive system is still developing and it’s best to introduce foods that are gentle on their systems.

HOW TO CHOOSE HEALTHY EGGS FOR YOUR BABY

Not all eggs are created equal. The best eggs for baby come from pastured hens–from a local farmer or even your own back yard. Chickens who live in a truly free-range environment eat a far more nutritious diet than factory hens, and this reflects directly in the nutrient content of their eggs. Eggs from pastured hens will contain more fat soluble vitamins and other critical nutrients for your baby.

If you can’t get eggs from pastured hens, next choice is organic eggs from hens whose diets are supplemented with vitamins and minerals often lacking in the diet of a factory hen. Organic hens are also not exposed to antibiotics like factory hens.

HOW TO PREPARE EGG YOLK FOR BABY

Egg yolks should be introduced when your baby starts showing interest in eating solid foods, according to Beautiful Babies. This is typically around 6-8 months old–but it’s best to trust your baby and your parental instincts when it comes to introducing solid foods to your baby.Cook egg yolks carefully to preserve their nutrients. You can do this with gentle hard boiling, scrambling, or poaching.

WHAT ABOUT EGG WHITES FOR BABIES?

Egg whites are a little more difficult to digest, and are better introduced closer to 12 months old when your baby’s digestive system has matured a little more.

This book goes far beyond just why to feed your baby egg yolks. Did you know that simple changes in your diet can increase your fertility, lower your chance of experiencing morning sickness, and even minimize the chance your child will ever need braces? Kristen Michaelis of Food Renegade discusses all of this and more in her new book Beautiful Babies. In the forward, Joel Salatin says,

“I find Kristen’s feisty spirit and mischievous humor both empowering and liberating. As a dad of two, husband of one, and grandfather of three, I covet these historically proven and normal principles for every family on earth. I wish this book had been around when my wife, Teresa, and I were starting our family.”

When my kids were babies.. I couldnt afford baby food.. They ate what we ate.. real whole food mashed up plus mama’s milk. Makes sense to me.

Elizabeth Walling says

Makes sense to me too! I think it’s just modern marketing that has us all believing babies need their own special line of food just to eat.

I tried commercial baby food. Had a little taste test first before feeding it to my baby – yuk, what was that slush masquerading as food? That meant I had to make it – not difficult at all. And all the real flavours intact and yummy!

Elizabeth Walling says

I was always a little grossed out by commercial baby food, too. And if I’m not willing to eat it, I figured I probably shouldn’t be giving it to my babies!

My 10 month old throws up a couple hours after I feed him egg yolks. =( I hope he out grows it.

Elizabeth Walling says

This can definitely be a sign of an allergy or intolerance. Like you said, he may grow out of it, but it’s a good idea to give his digestive system some more time to mature before testing it out in the future.
